When visiting other countries it is important to know and follow their rules of etiquette.

Last week missionaries Doug and Jael Robitaille arrived back in Indonesia for their next term of ministry. Jael noticed that there were fliers posted all around the airport telling tourists some of the rules of proper Indonesian etiquette.

She listed some of them for our edification -- should we ever visit Indonesia.

It is inappropriate to use the left hand to eat or to give or receive anything.

While eating dinner, talking is considered impolite.("Oops," wrote Jael, "didn't know that.")

Conversation is reserved for before or after the meal. ("No wonder I got such short answers.")

Never eat while walking in public or chew on a toothpick.

Do not put your hand in your pocket when talking with someone.

Never show the soles of your feet or point at anything with your foot.

Do not touch another person's head.

Doug and Jael are now getting settled in their home, reuniting with Indonesian friends -- and carefully observing the rules of etiquette they learned.

Pray for the Robitailles as they build and strengthen relationships and minister among the Indonesians. Pray also that their careful observation of culture will enhance their relationships.
