Language Learning is a Lifestyle

We are not qualified for this! Though a missionary couple had been trained how to learn an unwritten language, this thought kept going through their minds as they visited friends studying language and culture among an unreached people group. The task of language learning can appear quite daunting.

Dive In!

Learning language is a lifestyle. It requires moving into a village where you are unable to speak the language, seeking to fit in culturally, and constantly building relationships with the people. All the while you must keep your goal in mind: bringing the gospel to these people. That means considering how your words and actions will affect the message you have to share. Then there is all the technical stuff: making an alphabet, teaching literacy classes, translating the Bible, planning Bible lessons and teaching. Humbled, the couple again saw the enormity of the task.

Lean Hard!

But, in the midst of feeling completely incapable, they were refreshed by Christ’s words of reassurance to Paul, “‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

Missionaries studying culture and language face a formidable task. Pray that they would lean hard on the Lord as they look forward to the day they can communicate clearly and teach God’s Word in the tribal language.
