The messy work of planting a church

For centuries, the Tobo people of Papua New Guinea have held fast to their cultural beliefs, traditions and rituals. Breaking through the many layers with the truth of the Gospel would not be a neat and tidy task. But the missionaries had not come for easy. They had come fully prepared for a messy spiritual battle. And that's what they got.

When the Gospel comes to town, tribal marriages and families change. Regular practices like beatings, adultery and forced divorces are being replaced by forgiveness, kindness and compassion. God’s Word is making love stories possible where they never were before.

Teaching As Christ Taught

On the road to Emmaus, Jesus started at the beginning and “expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.” (Luke 24:27) Stephen (Acts 7) and Paul (Acts 26:22 and 28:23) followed a similar course of teaching. So it’s not just effective to teach from Creation through the ascension of Christ, it also seems like we’re in good company.

It's not enough to simply preach the Gospel. We're called to make disciples of all nations, and the First Century missionaries carried that out by establishing churches where the Gospel had not yet gone. So that seems like a pretty good pattern to follow.
